Rumors about the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros Wii U potentially coming out on November 21st have been floating around since early September, but a major online retailer listing the game on that same date has the Internet buzzing again. Amazon Canada has updated their product page for Super Smash Bros Wii U to state “This item will be released on September 21, 2014.” On its own, that could easily be chalked up to an error, but add it to the pile of other fringe retailers and anonymous sources confirming the date and it starts to get convincing.
Back in September, Nintendonews.com put up a great list of retailers perpetuating the November 21st rumor and recently brought the Amazon listing to light. Among the multiple listings in advertisements and reserved tickets was an email back-and-forth with an unnamed GameStop manager:
I have a story you might be interested in running on your site. I’m a manager a Gamestop and we’re getting word that every copy of Smash Bros. for Wii U will com with a free Amiibo figure. In addition, we’re hearing rumblings that the game’s street date will be November 21. That date isn’t set in stone, so mark it as a rumor for now. If possible, please keep my name anonymous. Keep up the good work.
This alleged release date helps shed some light on Nintendo’s plan for releasing the games apart from each other. If November 21st in indeed the big day, it is likely they are both done at this point and the delay was to increase the amount of consumers buying both versions, instead of just getting the Wii U version when it comes. The most interesting, and most important for Nintendo, repercussion of the decision will come when we see how many Wii U consoles the game sells. Do sales drag because so many people will already have bought the 3DS version? Or will the draw of beating the life out of Pacman as Mega Man on their 65″ TV be enough to entice people to buy the game a second time?
On top of that, November 21st also gets the game out the door a week before Black Friday, putting Nintendo’s flagship console on the minds of shoppers everywhere during the biggest sales day of the year. It’s a smart move that could make or break the Wii U going forward.[button type=”link” link=”http://nintendonews.com/2014/09/november-21-smash-bros-wii-u-amazon/” variation=”btn-danger” target=”blank”]Source: Nintendo News[/button]
