Robert Downey Jr. Hints At Playing Tony Stark Again

Iron Man fans are breathing a collective sigh of relief as Robert Downey Jr. tells The Hollywood Reporter that he will probably put the Tony Stark suit on again.

In a joint interview with his wife, Susan, Downey explains: “I’m sure we’ll ride that thing. You’ve got to surf that all the way in to shore.” Not the most definitive of yes’s, but it is far greater news than the “no plan in the works” he shared to Variety earlier in September. The choice of words could be key there – no plan does not necessarily mean there will not be anything, just that the creative and financial forces that be have not actively put effort into another dose of RDJ’s Tony Stark.

While Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to release in May of 2015, Downey is signed for a third Avenger’s movie tentatively scheduled for a 2018 release but no other confirmed movies or cameos. Considering Marvel’s trend-setting cross-film cameos either during or after the film, Iron Man has not appeared in any of them and is probably long overdue.

Despite his massive success, Downey seemingly remains down to earth in his views on the popularity of superhero films.

I think I was at the forefront of something that was coming into being, and I think it has carried me as much as I have informed it. That’s the healthy way to look at it. It’s so easy to become inflated by the successes, but what they really are are long, strong trends. It’s just another wave.

Regardless of his future as Tony Stark, Downey seems to be happily providing more of what his fans want: him. With two movies The Judge and Avengers: Age of Ultron, coming out in the next eight months along with rumors that he will reprise his role a third time as Sherlock Holmes, Robert Downey Jr. is here to stay.
