Zombieland Sequel Gets Writer

|

In an exclusive with Deadline.com, Sony Pictures reports that it has hired Dave Callaham to write the sequel to the 2009 cult classic, Zombieland, under the original movie’s director, Ruben Fleischer.

Callaham sparked the studio’s interest after his most recent film Jackpot, a fast-paced, dark humor thriller about amateur gang members who get double crossed, though his more popular titles include The Expendables and the recent remake of Godzilla.

While Fleischer is already set to direct the second film, no other previous cast members have been confirmed as participants.  There is much speculation if they would considering signing on as most of their respective careers have taken off considerably since the first film,  especially in the cases of  Emma Stone (The Help, The Amazing Spider Man) and Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network, Now You See Me). Woody Harrelson has had success in the Hunger Games series and now stars in a TV series drama, True Detective, while Abigail Breslin has already been practicing her zombie movies in the upcoming zombie film, Maggie. Who knows, maybe Bill Murray will find a way to re-invent himself and have another stellar cameo in there as well.

Considering the first installment was a cult classic, receiving critical acclaim and ultimately grossing over $100 million worldwide, it’s understandable the studio would want to cash in on a sequel. The original script left a lot of room to work with, perhaps Callaham will help fill in some gaps on Columbus’ rules for surviving the zombie laden world.
