Choo choo all aboard the Pan hype train. Yesterday, after a series of still images were posted online by Warner Bros, director Joe Wright revealed four posters showing off Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lilly, Garret Hedlund as Hook, and Levi Miller as Peter Pan himself. Today, a trailer brings those characters to life.
Pan will be an unconventional look at the classic child kidnapping tale, presumably in the form of a dark gritty reboot. Joe Wright is not a director for light-hearted and jaunty tales, having directed Pride & Prejudice, Hanna, and Atonement – all known for being gripping, emotional, character driven movies. From the limited synopsis we’ve seen, Pan will be a prequel following an even younger Peter Pan when he first arrives in a much darker Neverland and meets his nemesis… Blackbeard?
As Entertainment Weekly reported, Joe Wright does not plan to tell the same story of Neverland that we all know and grew up with when we were kids just wishing we could be whisked away in the middle of the night by a soprano-voiced teen in green tights. Instead, the Hook fans know will be a suave pirate type played by Tim Hundland and lacking his iconic hooked hand. Since this is indeed a prequel to an established story, it won’t at all be a shock to see him lose his hand at some point and even betray Peter to set up their future conflicts. Depending of course on how much Wright plans to change the story of Neverland.
Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara both look great, appearing to be a mix between Wes Anderson and Tim Burton characters. Check out the posters and trailer below.
