Some Of The Rarest And Most Bizarre Marvel Star Wars Covers

Now that Star Wars has made its way back home to Marvel comics and is selling faster than it can be printed with numerous great variant covers available, what better time to take a look back at some of the stranger covers out there? That was Lucasfilm’s Pete Vilmur’s mindset apparently when he went back and dug up some of the most unique, and hardest to find, vintage Marvel Star Wars covers.

Although the Star Wars comic books have called Dark Horse home since 1991, there was a decade where they were a Marvel property. The series was published by Marvel from 1977 to 1987, thanks to a persistent Lucasfilm asking Stan Lee to publish a comic book based around Star Wars – a franchise that was extremely young at the time, despite its immediate success – until he finally agreed.
Even in its most vanilla state, comic art from the ’60s, ’70s and even earlier can be pretty strange. Many of the covers chosen by Vilmur for this peculiar little list, as he explains, are so rare and unique because they are country-specific variants.

While the content of these comics doesn’t veer too far from what was originally released in the US versions, they do contain the occasional editorial exclusive and pin-up sketched by a regional artist. Since the vast number of Marvel Star Wars comics reprinted throughout the world used variations of the US covers, these examples stand out for being totally original and, for the most part, exclusive to their region.
