After a month of speculation following an Instagram image dump by Neill Blomkamp showing several pieces of concept art, the director announced on Wednesday that he is officially on board to make an Alien film. Taking to Instagram once again, Blomkamp dropped the bomb with what appears to be yet another piece of the concept art that wasn’t revealed with the original batch of images.
Being that this information is still new, there’s no telling how he finally landed his apparent dream role, but there’s a good chance that Internet interest played a part. Ever since he posted the batch of images to start 2015, fans have been dreaming up scenarios and spreading their excitement across social media. We also got in on that love fest with our own in-depth breakdown a few days after the leak.
At least according to Blomkamp’s own admissions, those old concept art pieces were done with little to no studio intervention. With that in mind, there’s no indication that the concept art he made of his volition will have any impact on this upcoming film, whenever that may be released, but that doesn’t stop any of us from dreaming about it.
Just a few days ago during an interview with MTV, Alien star Sigourney Weaver seemed to be open to the idea of making an Alien film with Blomkamp, stating:
[It] would be very organic and very original, and because of that, it would make me want to do it. If it was someone as talented as Neill, I’d certainly listen.
The two also worked together on the sci-fi thriller Chappie, which hits theaters March 6th.
