It was only a matter of time before Google started showing ads within the Google Play Store. Within the next few weeks, a limited set of users will start seeing Google Play sponsored apps within the Google Play app. The ads displayed will be pulled from a pilot group of advertisers who are running Google search ads for their apps.
App discovery plays a critical role in driving your continued success, and over the past year Google has provided best practices to enhance app discovery and engagement, as well as app promotion tools to get the most out of search and display advertising for developers. We are always looking for new ways to help you get your apps in front of potential new users. That’s why, in the next few weeks, we will begin piloting sponsored search results on Google Play, bringing our unique expertise in search ads to the store.
The sponsored search results will display at the top of the Apps tab or search list based on your search query.
Google goes on to state they have paid more than $7 billion over the past year to developers, and are helping developers grow “successful global businesses.” One can’t help but wonder how these sponsored search results will help smaller independent app developers grow their businesses, as undoubtedly the bigger companies will be able to invest more money in paid search, thus being able to bid higher on when could potentially be coveted placement within Play Store search results.
The company will be following up regarding expanding the program after they’ve received some feedback from the pilot program.
