Sony has announced that it will be shutting the doors on its PlayStation Mobile (PSM) platform later this year. The move comes just two-and-a-half years after the platform initially launched to the public back in October of 2012.
Through a post on the PlayStation community page, it was announced that distribution of content on the PSM platform will cease after July 21, 2015. In-app purchases and the ability to re-download purchased content will follow suit on September 10th when the PlayStationMobile for Android app will be taken off of the Android Play store.
If you wish to access content you already purchased on PSM, you will need to activate your device via a quick set of instructions posted below. Previously, content would be automatically authenticated each time your device connected to the internet, but with PSM going offline, this obviously won’t happen after September 10th.
PlayStation Mobile was an effort by Sony to give mobile gamers and PlayStation Vita and PlayStation TV users the opportunity to easily download and play games across multiple devices. Mobile phones that were “PlayStation Certified,” which at the time of this writing means running Android 2.3 or higher with various unannounced hardware requirements, had the ability to download and play games built on the PSM platform using the PSM SDK or Unity for PSM. The service never quite caught on the way Sony surely intended and here, less than three years after its public release, the doors are being shut for good.
- For PS Vita users: You will need to complete the device activation process by performing the steps below between March 10, 2015, and September 10, 2015:
Go to [Settings] > [PSN℠] > [System Activation] > [PlayStation Mobile] > [Activate] > [OK].
- For PlayStation®Certified device users: You will need to open up the PSM app and launch any purchased PSM content between April 10, 2015 and September 10, 2015*3 to complete the content authentication process.
- Please ensure that you have downloaded all of the games that you want to keep. After September 10, 2015, you will not be able to re-download your purchased content.
- Devices that are not authenticated prior to September 10, 2015 will be unable to access previously purchased PSM content after that date.
While the PS Vita is considered a mobile gaming device, it’s important to note that this is NOT the end of that device in any way. You will still be able to purchase, download, and play virtual games on the PS Vita, just nothing developed specifically for the PlayStation Mobile platform.
