First Star Wars Spinoff Given A Title, Star Wars: Episode VIII Coming Spring 2017

|

It was revealed during Disney’s yearly shareholders meeting earlier today that the first of many planned Star Wars spinoff films will be titled Star Wars: Rogue One. A release date was also given for Episode VIII, which is being directed by Rian Johnson.
This is simply a name announcement for Rogue One that was revealed during a shareholders meeting, so not much official information is available yet. Earlier rumors point to the first Star Wars spinoff revolving around a band of bounty hunters attempting to steal plans to build a new Death Star. It will star Oscar-winning actress Felicity Jones and be directed by Godzilla (2014) director Gareth Edwards.
Eager fans will also likely be hoping that it has something to do with the popular Rogue Squadron series of games which first debuted with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3D on the PC in 1998. So far there is no indication that this is the case. At the very least, it will likely involve the Rogue Squadron itself, which is present throughout the Star Wars universe.
Also revealed during the shareholders meeting was the fact that the next film in the numbered series, Episode VIII, will hit theaters on May 26, 2017. Rian Johnson, who directed 2012’s Loopers, as well as three episodes of Breaking Bad (“Ozymandias”, “Fifty-One”, “Fly”) will write and direct the film, which is still without a proper title. Episode VIII will “continue the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” unlike Rogue One which is a standalone spinoff.
