Alex Garland Puts The Final Nail In The Dredd Sequel Coffin

|

Despite a rush of fan interest and generally positive critical reception for the 2012 action film Dredd, a sequel is likely not ever coming. Speaking during a roundtable interviewDredd writer Alex Garland confirmed that there are currently no plans, in any way shape or form, for a sequel involving the original cast or crew of the film.

There isn’t, as far as I can tell, going to be a Dredd sequel. The basic mechanics of film financing say that if you make a film that loses a ton of money, you’re not going to get a sequel. And that’s basically what happened.

And I understand and appreciate the support the film has had, and the campaigns that have existed for it, and it’s really genuinely gratifying — I love it in all respects except one, which is when I hear about people buying copies of the DVD in order to boost sales and to change the figures. And what I want to say to them is, “Don’t do that. Keep your money.” Because the people that are making the decisions are much colder and harder than that. And the graphs they’re looking at are not really going to be sufficiently dented by that.

So the support for the film is truly appreciated. But if there is going to be a sequel, it’s not going to be me and the team of people who worked on the previous film, it’s going to be another bunch of people. And good luck to them, and I hope it happens. I really do. I hope they do a better job than we did.

This shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, seeing as the film managed to lose nearly $15 million during its cinematic run. It wasn’t until it left theaters that it began to attract a large number of fans, along with a cult status. Since its box office failure, those fans who still clung to hope went so far as creating a Day of Dredd – a yearly push to try and get a sequel made. Occurring every October 1st, the event was promoted with the #DayOfDredd hashtag and encouraged fans to watch, buy, share, and generally support the first movie as a way to send a sign that a sequel could be successful.

Unfortunately for those fans, money talks, and in this case money said that no one bothered to watch Dredd in theaters so a sequel would likely fail as well.

Just last week, Dredd Executive Producer Adi Shankar released a video detailing how a sequel could potentially be made, and why the first failed on a financial level. Even if you have no interest in Dredd, it’s an interesting look into the world of film financing and how the interaction between money and independent movie studios works.

Despite this proverbial nail in the coffin of a potential Dredd sequel, fans likely won’t start pushing and hoping. The Internet has proved to have a lot of power in recent years, having been at least partially responsible for generating enough interest in the Deadpool movie, and a Neill Blomkamp-directed Alien film to get them both greenlit by their respective studios.
