Post-Secret Wars Avengers Team Revealed

With Secret Wars and the end of the Marvel and Ultimate Marvel universes inching closer, Marvel is slowly starting to release information about upcoming team-ups, new series, and new characters. One of the most anticipated new teams has been The All-New, All Different Avengers, which we now know consists of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, The Vision, Nova, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Ms. Marvel.
All told, these new Avengers are going to be very different from what fans have known for years, which isn’t neccesarily a bad thing. As Marvel Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort told WIRED:

It’s an All-New, All-Different Avengers for an All-New, All-Different Marvel Universe! So throw out your preconceptions about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes as we change the game, rewrite the rules and destroy childhoods with an Avengers team that more closely reflects the world outside your window!

The first three right off the top don’t come as a surprise, as Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America are considered Avengers staples, especially since the massive success of their solo films and the first Avengers movie. If you’re coming into these new Avengers having only seen said movies, you may be a little confused seeing the lineup. Thor is still a blonde with flowing hair, but the Norse God is now a Goddess. Captain America is Steve Rogers’ long-time friend, Sam Wilson (formerly Falcon) who has had his own recent comic run as All-New Captain America – a series which is ending in May alongside the Secret Wars crossover event. Who is actually behind the Iron Man mask is still up for question, but there’s a decent chance it won’t be Tony Stark.
Another familiar hero in the Avengers with a new face is Miles Morales as Ultimate Spider-Man. The idea that Marvel is purposefully casting very different-looking characters to account for contracts expiring in their cinematic universe is another story entirely, but there have been rumors that the first Spider-Man in the MCU won’t be white, and Morales being the default Spidey could feed into those rumors.

As for the others, Nova is a lesser-known galactic hero. He’s been featured pretty heavily alongside Spider-Man in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon and as part of Spider-Man’s playset in Disney Infinity 2.0, but other than that many non-comic book readers may not be familiar with him as he hasn’t appeared in any films. In comic book form, Sam Alexander took up the mantle as Nova in 2011 after the last Nova Prime, Richard Rider, disappeared in the cancerverse along with Guardians of the Galaxy member Star-Lord (the latter of whom eventually returned).
Keeping up with the diversity of the black Captain America and Spider-Man and the female Thor is the 16-year-old Pakistani-American Kamala Khan continuing her role as Ms. Marvel. Ms. Marvel recently received her seventh printing, which puts her in the upper echelon of Marvel comic runs.
Secret Wars, and the end of more than 30 comic runs, begins in May. The first issue of All-New, All-Different Avengers will be given away as part of Free Comic Book Day on May 2.
