Ready Player One Has A Director: Steven Spielberg

Comics/Books / Entertainment / Movies

On Wednesday it was announced that Steven Spielberg had signed on to direct Warner Brothers’ adaptation of the award-winning novel, Ready Player One – a story by Ernest Cline that mostly takes place in a virtual world called OASIS. If you haven’t read the book and you grew up during the ’80s watching everything from My Little Pony to Transformers, to Godzilla and kung-fu movies, playing arcade games until your fingers had no feeling in them, and reading science fiction and comic books like they were disappearing, then you will feel right at home in the world of Ready Player One as all of that is referenced in various ways throughout the book.
The story takes place around 2044 and follows Wade Watts, both inside and outside the game world, as he chases clues and rumors to discover the secrets and the keys that control OASIS. This brings up an interesting question: how will they make a movie where the key element is essentially a first-person view of a world, and a virtual one at that? Make it too real and people won’t notice a difference between the movie’s virtual and real worlds. Make it too ‘fake’ and it just looks bad. On top of that, do it all where the main character isn’t even on screen.
With special effects where they are today, and with Warner Brothers being on the front lines of CGI innovation with movies like The Matrix and Inception, it’s possible if anyone can do it, I suspect the digital crew at WB can. It’s a movie I’m definitely going to keep my eyes on for developments.
If you haven’t read the book, I highly suggest you do so. You can pick it up right now on Google Play and Amazon for $2.99 for the digital copy. Well worth the read if, like me, you get all nostalgia-y for the ’80s from time to time.
