Syfy’s Ascension mini-series graced our screens in 2014 as the channel’s first mini-series in six years. While some had hoped it would follow the Battlestar Galactica route and be commissioned as a full series, it appears it is not to be.
Mild spoilers if you haven’t seen the show…
Ascension was based around a somewhat improbable ’60s-era high-class, glamorous (and backstabbing) society contained within a generational spaceship on a hundred year long journey to the stars. Think Mad Men meets Lost in Space.
Or perhaps not, as it turned out that Ascension was not actually a spaceship at all but something of a strange social experiment. Behind the scenes, there was mystery and intriigue as factions attempted to take control of the set-up. With this convoluted backstory, it is difficult to see quite how storylines could have been sustained across one or more full series, so this announcement isn’t a total surprise. Syfy said of the move:
We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series.
While Syfy have turned down the option of a series, it’s still possible that producers Universal Cable Productions, Lionsgate TV, and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions could approach other networks or outlets to see if they are interested.
