The latest console sales statistics have been released by NPD and in a bit of a surprise, Microsoft’s Xbox One has outsold Sony’s PlayStation 4 for the month of April. Xbox still has some catching up to do as it is estimated that since releasing in November 2013, Sony has sold roughly 20 million PlayStation 4 consoles while Microsoft has sold around 12 million Xbox One consoles.
Microsoft told VentureBeat:
“As the best-selling console in the U.S. in April, fans set record April sales and engagement for Xbox One last month,” Xbox marketing boss Mike Nichols said. “Xbox One console sales in the U.S. increased 63 percent in April 2015 compared to April 2014 and Xbox Live comparisons showed the number of active global users [Xbox One and Xbox 360] grew 24 percent. We are grateful to our fans for their passion and support and are looking forward to sharing more on the best game lineup in Xbox history at E3.”
Sony was quick to downplay the NPD report stating that:
“According to NPD, PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the US. We are looking forward to an amazing E3.”
As VentureBeat noted, Sony is lumping the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita in that statement.
Even though the Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4, hardware sales dropped due to falling sales of last-generation consoles including the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
“April 2015 hardware sales decreased by 4 percent due to the 55 percent decline in sales of [Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii] hardware,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said. “[Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U] hardware sales were stable, and portable hardware increased by 36 percent.”
On the software side, its no surprise that the newly released Mortal Kombat X topped the charts in a relatively slow month for new AAA releases.
