Marvel’s Phase 2 for Netflix Could Add the Punisher, Ghost Rider, Blade and More

With Marvel’s phase 2 for feature films wrapping up with the Avengers: Age of Ultron, Marvel’s attention has turned toward phase the future of the MCU. However, the Disney owned company isn’t putting its eggs all in one basket as a new report has leaked showing that Marvel will be bringing some big names to its TV universe in phase 2 for Netflix.

When Marvel and Netflix’s phase 1’s Daredevil dropped, it received critical acclaim from reviewers and Netflix users all around. The plan has been to implement other shows based on Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, culminating into a miniseries based on the Defenders. Daredevil did so well though, the announcement for a second season came relatively quickly.

While the MCU has been known for it’s lighter movies, filled with jokes and heart-felt scenes, Daredevil explored a darker universe and it looks like Marvel plans to do that with phase 2, both in the titles it’s planning and the storylines it wants to explore.

According to the leaked report, the Defenders will see the addition of Elektra. In more exciting rumors, the company is also looking at bringing Ghost Rider, Punisher, Blade and others into the Marvel Television Universe (MTU). Given Daredevil‘s dark motif, all three of these characters could see shows of their own, though from what it sounds like Netflix is a bit hesitant.

Some of the stories require supernatural elements in order to tell these characters’ stories and including them could push Netflix into a “goofy” area, something the company isn’t comfortable with. Another aspect is Netflix wants these series geared toward a “hard PG-13” instead of an R rating. With none of the defenders crossing the line and killing criminals, Punisher would be a challenge if added to the MTU.

The last two times we saw the Punisher on the big screen, the movies weren’t well received so a Netflix reboot could do wonders for the character. As is common place in television series, a cameo and backdoor pilot/crossover for these characters could lead to full-blown series for the characters if they’re well received.

Marvel is also working on bringing big name film actors to make cameos in these series as the company did with the season one finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. A current rumor circulating suggests that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange character could make an appearance.

As if that weren’t enough, there have been talks regarding a miniseries or movie involving Hawkeye or Black Window. Given Marvel’s being in hot water for not developing a Black Widow movie, it could be an attempt to right that wrong. It also could be a project that would feature both MTU and MCU characters, meshing the two into one big happy family.

Neflix aside, it also appears that other shows based on Cloak and Dagger, Ms. Marvel and even a Hulk preview are in early development.

While the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spin-off was put on hiatus, it looks like Marvel is working hard on its TV universe. Which characters would you like to see added or developed? Let us know in the comments below, or on Google+, Twitter or Facebook.
