With E3 just around the corner, the flood of new game trailers and information is just beginning. Redacted Studios, in partnership with indie publisher Versus Evil, has released the first ever official game trailer for Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma in time for E3.

For those of you unfamiliar with Afro Samurai, it is a manga series written back in 1999 that follows the life of a samurai who witnessed the death of his father, who was the owner of the No. 1 headband, by Justice, the owner of the No. 2 headband, while he was a child. Once he reaches adulthood, Afro Samurai sets out to avenge his father’s death. The series was inspired by writer and illustrator Takashi Okazaki’s love of American culture and hip hop music.

The manga was adapted into a 5-episode mini-series in 2007, and received a follow up movie in 2009 dubbed Afro Samurai: Resurrection. Given the hip hop influence on the series, the soundtrack for the TV series and film were provided by RZA of Wu Tang Clan fame with the character of Afro Samurai being voiced by none other than Samuel L. Jackson.

In 2009, Namco Bandai Games released Afro Samurai for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and combined hack and slash mechanics in a cel-shaded animation style. The game was met with lukewarm reviews, and pretty much followed the story that was introduced in the manga series. As with the TV series and film, Afro Samurai was again voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.

Based on the title and reveal video, Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma will follow the story of Kuma (who happens to wear a cybernetic teddy bear mask), long time friend of Afro who studied under the same master but is now seeking revenge after Afro killed their master in order to obtain the No. 2 headband in his own quest for revenge. It should be interesting to see how the story plays out from Kuma’s point of view. Be sure to check back as we’ll be keeping you updated on new information as it is made available.
