Hulu Adds Commercial-Free Subscription Option

|

Hulu, the popular U.S. TV show streaming service, has unveiled a new “No Commercials Plan” and renamed their default subscription to the “Limited Commercials Plan.”

Hulu now gives you a choice of two plans: Limited Commercials (our existing $7.99 plan) and our new No Commercials ($11.99) plan. With our No Commercials plan, you can now watch your favorite shows commercial free on all of your Hulu devices.

The new plan is just as it sounds, watch your favourite shows, catch up on past season of popular shows, or check out new TV series from ABC, NBC, Fox, and others completely commercial free. Hulu’s SHOWTIME option can also be added to either plan for an additional $8.99/mth allowing for more flexibility in how Hulu users consume their media content.

Hulu Plus is no longer, as the default service is being renamed Hulu but will still feature the same full access to the Hulu library across all your devices.

Plans can be switched at any time and are applicable to any device you use to access your account, which means you’ll get commercial free streaming on your mobile devices as well. Hulu does note in its FAQ that if you sign up on an iOS device (iPads and iPhones) and pay for your Hulu subscription with your iTunes account, there is an additional charge due to transaction costs associated with Apple. The cost of the No Commercials plan when you sign up on an iOS device is $13.99/month.

There’s a bit of a caveat as well, not all shows will air commercial free under No Commercials plan due to agreements.

In response to feedback from our viewers, we started offering a commercial-free experience on Hulu. For a small number of shows, however, we have not obtained the rights to stream commercial free and they are not included in our No Commercials plan. You can still easily access these shows with a short commercial before and after each episode with no interruptions during the episode. Specific shows that still have commercials accessible through the No Commercials plan will be noted throughout the signup, switching, and playback experience. While the list of shows may change, these shows are currently: Grey’s Anatomy, Once Upon A Time, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Scandal, Grimm, New Girl, and How To Get Away With Murder.
