Bungie Doesn’t Actually Have A 10 Year Plan For Destiny

The third DLC and first full expansion for Destiny, “The Taken King,” just hit gaming consoles. In the week or so it’s been available players have experienced an immersive story, a new level cap and a brand new raid. While things are looking good for Bungie, they weren’t always sunshine and roses for the former Halo developer.

A long time ago, Destiny was an under-wraps project only discussed by Activision and Bungie in the quiet-confines of closed doors. At one point, Activision and Infinity Ward were locked in a legal dispute. In that dispute, information of a decade long $140 million project that suggested a four-game plus four-expansion path was revealed.

Given Destiny‘s ever-expanding universe, the logical leap suggests that this is the 10-year-long project discussed in the legal dispute. The question though, is just how serious is Bungie about this decade-long project? Is there any weight to it or was it just smoke and mirrors?

Well, according to latest issue of Edge, Eric “Urk” Osborne, Bungie community and marketing relations manager,

The 10-year agreement does actually exist, but, it’s not what we’re expecting. As he put it:

“Those things were so distracting, and not about the experience we were creating,” he said. “It just became the narrative. I mean, I drive a Honda Civic. I don’t know shit about $500 million. A ten-year plan? It’s a ten-year partnership agreement. It has nothing to do with the development of the game proper. To think that somehow, before Destiny had shipped, we had some ten-year plan written down somewhere? It’s comical. We allowed the narrative to get constructed that Bungie is just a corporate entity and not a bunch of humans, a collection of people who are just trying to make a really great game.”

So there you have it. It has nothing to do with developing Destiny for 10 years but an agreement among partners. While we’re sure that Bungie will continue to support Destiny for as long as people continue playing it, there’s no set time frame for just how long that will be.
