According to an exclusive from Collider, Zach Snyder has been in talks with HBO on adapting Alan Moore’s complex comic book series, Watchmen, into a television series. Whether or not the talks involve the series being a prequel, sequel, or otherwise new spin on the Watchmen story is yet to be revealed.

Snyder directed the 2009 film adaptation that had fair success at the box office. While not quite the smash hit recent superhero movies have been, considering the gritty, dark undertones, complex characters, and even more complicated storylines, Snyder did an impressive job at making it palatable on the silver screen. The film ended up with a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes but credited it for being a faithful adaptation of the graphic novel.

Perhaps now that the superhero genre has skyrocketed and now the villains and vigilantes are even reaching superhero popularity, a Watchmen TV series would be lauded by viewers. Considering the high demand for original content and HBO’s current hit drama, Game of Thrones, reportedly set to end at the end of season 7, that gives HBO about two years to muster up their next big thing. Perhaps they think Watchmen could be it.

Obviously no more details have been released and HBO tends to be rather fickle with where they throw their money (remember David Fincher’s Utopia series?), so everything is speculation at this point. Until an official announcement and release date is made from HBO itself, it is probably best to not set our hearts on anything just yet.

Moore’s original story is considered a mini-series, with only twelve issues released between September 1986 and October 1987. Watchmen followed the lives of normal human vigilantes throughout the 20th century. After an accident in a government physics research laboratory, Jon Osterman turns into Dr. Manhattan and was the only vigilante to possess superhuman powers. The remaining characters were all just extremely skilled and athletic.

Would you watch a Watchmen TV series? How much watch could a Watchman watch if a Watchman could watch Watchmen?
