NXOE Preview Users Can Access Cortana On Xbox One

The New Xbox One Experience Preview has rolled out to almost all of those in the Xbox Dashboard Preview program. The NXOE is the biggest dashboard update to the Xbox One since it launched nearly two years ago, and gives users faster access in a simpler, cleaner dashboard.

One of the key features missing from the NXOE is that of Cortana. As it is based on Windows 10, Cortana will be integrated into the NXOE and replace the current voice recognition system that is currently limited to listening for commands and doesn’t respond back. Cortana will be implemented, but according to Major Nelson, it won’t be officially launched until next year.

For those who have asked about Cortana, our plan is to add Cortana to the Xbox One experience preview later this year. From there, we’ll ensure that the experience is tuned for gamers before we officially launch Cortana in 2016.

As with anything these days, people poke around and try out a number of button combinations to find hidden secrets, and lo and behold, even though it doesn’t have an app icon or a place in settings, Cortana is accessible on your Xbox One.

A video has surfaced showing an Australian gamer access Cortana by completing the following steps:

  • In the NXOE, press left on your Xbox One controller to open the guide menu
  • Scroll down to the settings gear icon
  • Press left to access the settings options
  • Scroll up, and keep pressing up continuously
  • While pressing up, push the A button a couple times and Cortana should load up for you

Upon loading, you can ask Cortana a number of things including weather, calendar, and tracking information. It doesn’t look like accessing Cortana through this method adds an icon or easier access and you’ll have to go through this process each time you want to access Cortana – at least for the time being.

Your results may vary, while it seems to have worked in the video below, I received a “I’m afraid I’m not available to help in your region” message in a Cortana style box. Check out the video from Aussie Gamer to see Cortana in action.

Are you on the NXOE? Does Cortana work for you following these steps? Let us know in the comments below, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
