Google Providing Free Wi-Fi At Mumbai Central Rail Station

Google has now started providing free public Wi-Fi at Mumbai Central. Google says that this Internet connection is fast enough to stream HD videos.

Starting today, those passing through Mumbai Central station will have access to something
that we hope will make their wait a bit more enjoyable and productive — free, high-speed Wi-Fi. So, if you’re one of the 100,000 people who’ll pass through Mumbai Central today, go ahead, stream the video below in HD to learn more. After that, how about sending those last minute work emails, downloading a new game or offlining a few YouTube videos to keep the kids, and yourself, entertained on the journey ahead.

As Google points out, 100,000 people pass through the railway station, which is bound to take a toll on the speed with so many people accessing the Internet. So, Google says that after an hour of use, the speed will be throttled. The release is quick to reassure us that the speed after the first hour of use should be suitable for most things.

The service requires the user to have a cell phone number, to which an access code will be sent. The user can connect up to two additional devices, such as a laptop or a tablet, with the same phone number. Google has included a handy infographic to guide us on how to connect to the network.

This is part of Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s initiative to provide Internet to 400 railway stations across the country. This plan was announced last year as part of the Digital India initiative of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he visited Google’s headquarters.

We’d like to help get these next billion Indians online—so they can access the entire web, and all of its information and opportunity. And not just with any old connection—with fast broadband so they can experience the best of the web. That’s why, today, on the occasion of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to our U.S. headquarters, and in line with his Digital India initiative, we announced a new project to provide high-speed public Wi-Fi in 400 train stations across India.

The company plans to have this system working in 100 railway stations by the end of the year, with Allahabad, Jaipur, Patna, and Ranchi set to receive it next.
