Blu-Ray leaks happen on almost a daily basis in the wide world of torrenting and torrent sites but those sites are in high gear today as fans clamor to download Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. The official release of the Blu-Ray is April 5th and this leaking to torrent sites shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, the movie has already been on torrents sites in camcorder versions. Disney is aggressively filing DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) requests with any sites or torrent sites that are hosting any sort of pirated copy of the movie but not all have complied with the take down.
The first copy appeared online yesterday and within 12 hours an estimated 250,000 people had already grabbed a copy. This number is likely to increase to several millions during the weeks to come.
While the number of people downloading the Blu-Ray version of the movie is certainly going to increase, we suspect that won’t do much to hurt the sales for Disney. Of course that doesn’t justify this Blu-Ray, or any other, being leaked and downloaded but it happens and is expected by the major studios. There has been some talk that many who torrent also eventually buy the movie and pay to see the theatrical release. Whether or not that is true remains to be proven.
For now though, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is available to download via torrent on the Internet but before you go searching you might think twice, especially if you’ve never done it before. There’s a lot of gremlins, bugs and other variables you should consider before torrenting, many of which could have consequences. For the non-tech savvy I would say, be patient and wait to rent the movie or buy it, the problems you might bring on yourself torrenting is probably not worth catching this movie early.
