Calling all Overwatch fans! The video game gods (otherwise known as Blizzard Entertainment in this instance) have smiled upon thee and will be offering an Open Beta to the masses starting May 5th (tomorrow!) and ending May 9th. For all players who were diligent about pre-ordering the game, Early Access codes were sent out for the Open Beta that officially started on May 2nd.

Overwatch Open Beta will be available to anyone in all regions at the same time across the supported platforms: PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One starting at 4:00 p.m. PDT and ending at 10am PDT May 9th.

All 21 heroes will be available during Open Beta, including all maps, features, loot boxes, and game modes. Overwatch currently has 4 game modes across 12 maps.

  • Assault: Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, and Volskaya Industries
  • Escort: Dorado, Route 66, and Watchpoint: Gibraltar
  • Assault/Escort Hybrid: Hollywood, King’s Row, and Numbani
  • Control: Ilios, Lijiang Tower, and Nepal

Each game mode supports 6v6 and can be played in true PvP fashion in Quick Play or against the computer in Play vs AI. Players can fully customize their game play in Custom Games to do a mix of people and AI as well as tweak settings like ‘headshots only’ and auto-balancing groups. A Weekly Brawl introduces specific game rules and restrictions to keep things interesting (can someone say an all Tracer match?).

While PlayStation 4 players will be able to access Overwatch Open Beta without a PlayStation Plus subscription, XBox One players will need XBox Live Gold to access it. However both platforms will require Internet subscriptions when the game fully launches. Console players can expect about 11 GB of their precious hard drive to go to Overwatch, where PC players will only need to allocate about 6.5 GB of space.

Last but not least, all progression, levels, skins, rewards, and EVERYTHING will definitely reset before the game officially launches. So don’t get too attached to those name plate icons just yet. You can check out all of those deets and more at playOverwatch.com.
