Eric Holder Says Edward Snowden Should Be Punished

Edward Snowden is both hated and loved, depending on who you’re asking. Eric Holder seems to both love and hate the man saying he did a public service but should be punished for stealing U.S. Government secrets. Snowden has been keeping himself out of the reach of U.S. government hands while continuing to speak out against both government and private privacy/security issues he believes citizens should be concerned about. He recently Tweeted that users should avoid Google’s latest messaging app, Allo, due to its default setting that disables encryption. Eric Holder also had a few things to say concerning Snowden.

“We can certainly argue about the way in which Snowden did what he did, but I think that he actually performed a public service by raising the debate we engaged in and by the changes that we made,” Holder said. “Now, I would say doing what he did in the way he did it was inappropriate and illegal.”

“He’s got to make a decision,” Holder said of Snowden. “He’s broken the law. In my view, he needs to get lawyers, come on back and decide what he wants to do — go to trial, try to cut a deal.”

“But in deciding what an appropriate sentence should be, a judge could take into account the usefulness of having that national debate,” Holder added.

Edward Snowden has said he would return to the U.S. to face trial if the U.S. government could give him a fair trial. But Snowden doesn’t believe that will be possible and as far as the law is concerned, he is guilty.
