Following the success of Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013, NetherRealm Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and DC Entertainment have announced Injustice 2. Coming to the Xbox One and Playstation 4 in 2017, the sequel will boast a plethora of features. Included in the newness are new characters and new environments. In a blog post, NetherRealm Studios promised to kick it up a notch.
We’re doing all of the things you’d expect from a sequel. We’re adding new characters, new environments, and we’re taking environment destruction and interaction to the next level.
However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg it would seem as NetherRealm is adding more elements to the game. The company will apparently be adding a brand new gear system. This will give gamers complete control over the characters they play, allowing them to build their very own Batman, Superman, Flash and so on.
“Expanding the DC Universe in games continues to be one of our top priorities, and Injustice 2 showcases amazing gameplay and an original story to bring the characters to life for players,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. “NetherRealm Studios is offering fans an experience of customizing and battling with DC’s iconic characters in an entirely new way.”
NetherRealm mentioned that the gear system in Injustice 2 will follow RPG-like mechanics. Players are rewarded with loot drops every time they play the game. Each drop will earn players character-specific gear used to outfit and power each player’s roster. In addition to changing the look of each character, each piece will change fighting strategies. The more gear a roster receives, the more unique they become. As NetherRealm Studios put it:
As you gear up your characters, you’re building a roster of DC Super Heroes and Super-Villains that reflects your choices, and your preferences, which can be vastly different than your opponents. A few play sessions in, you can expect your Aquaman to look and play different than anyone else’s Aquaman you may come across.
Injustice 2 will pick up where Injustice: Gods Among Us left off. Superman is imprisoned in a Red Sun cell, while Batman continues to keep the forces who wish Superman back in power at bay. NetherRealm Studios also promised to continue dropping more information on the latest in the Injustice franchise as it looms closer to its 2017 launch.
To celebrate the announcement of Injustice 2, fans who have downloaded the hugely successful Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile game can unlock the Injustice 2 versions of Superman and Aquaman through the in-game Challenge Modes.
The announcement aside, NetherRealm Studios and DC Comics revealed a teaser trailer for the sequel. The trailer shows off a little of how this gear system could work. Check it out below.
