Microsoft Studios shutting down Xbox Fitness

Another nail was driven into the proverbial coffin of Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox One, adding to speculation that the company is no longer interested in supporting the motion tracking and voice peripheral. Microsoft Studios has announced a phased shutdown for Xbox Fitness, the Xbox One Kinect fitness program, starting today with a full shutdown of the service coming next July. First released in November 2013 alongside the Xbox One console, Xbox Fitness allowed you to workout in the comfort of your own home with world class trainers. Xbox Fitness included programs with Jillian Michaels, Tracy Anderson, Tony Horton of P90X, Shaun T of INSANITY, and more.

The base app was free, and you could purchase training add-ons including Extreme Combat, Beachbody P90X, YO:30, and many more, allowing you to tailor your training to your requirements in the comfort of your own home. Xbox Fitness utilized the Kinect sensor to provide feedback during your training. Unfortunately, Microsoft Studios has not only decided to cease providing new content as of today, but they will be shuttering the service completely by July 2017.

HOW TO: Change system date in OS X from Terminal
  • Beginning today, June 27, 2016, Xbox Fitness content will no longer be available for purchase. For existing users, the content you’ve purchased will be available to play for a year, through June 30, 2017.
  • On December 15, 2016, we will be removing our “Free with Gold” offer.  Until then, Gold members will still be able to access and play the over 30+ workouts available for streaming as a part of this offer for free.
  • On July 1, 2017, Xbox Fitness (and all associated content) will no longer be available for download/play. This includes content you’ve purchased. At that time, Xbox Fitness will no longer be available for download from Xbox Marketplace and content will not be available for play from the Xbox Marketplace nor within the game. Xbox Fitness users will no longer be able access Xbox Fitness and the associated workouts/programs.

Microsoft Studios cites the main reason for closing down the service completely was due to “the reality of updating the service regularly in order to sustain it.” Depending on usage numbers, that’s understandable, I’ve given it a go a few times and it’s kicked my butt each time. What’s puzzling however, is that they will be shutting down the service completely next July, leaving those who purchased Xbox Fitness content completely out of luck. While I’m sure there are licensing agreements involved, it’s hard to understand why Microsoft can’t continue to let the service run with the existing content — especially for those who have purchased extra training programs.
