Rumor: Wire-free AirPods launching with iPhone 7?

One of the biggest rumors to hit the mobile technology world is the exclusion of the headphone jack on the iPhone 7. With the removal of the headphone jack we all wondered how Apple would deliver music to users’ ears. While the headphone jack rumor was swirling, another rumor was also making the rounds… Apple’s development of their own wire-free AirPods. Wire-free earbuds aren’t anything new, there have been companies developing these for a bit now. 9To5Mac has reported on an Apple filing for trademark on the wire-free AirPods name and it looks like that trademark is happening.

MacRumors notes that as the trademark has progressed through the review process, a few more details have been uncovered. As reported earlier, the trademark was requested by a company with the name of Entertainment Flight LLC. However, Apple often uses shell companies to file for trademarks, having done so for “iPad,” “CarPlay,”and “iWatch.” While there were signs suggesting that Entertainment in Flight was an Apple shell, a new document has been released with the signature of someone who appears to be an Apple employee.

In a document clarifying some of the broad terms used in the original filing, an Entertainment in Flight manager’s signature was discovered. The “manager” is named Jonathan Brown, which just so happens to be the name of an Apple employee. At Apple, Brown carries the title of “Senior Standards Counsel,” which sees him handle things like patents and trademarks.

While many have been up in arms about the headphone jack removal. It makes sense that Apple would want to capitalize on its major acquisition of Beats Audio. Removing the headphone jack and bundling in Apple-Beats branded wire-free AirPods will begin to give Beats a better position in the market. While Beats already has its place in the market, Apple could expand the name recognition with bundled Apple-Beats wire-free AirPods which could translate to more Beats headphone sales.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple is developing a line of wire-free AirPods each with their own sound signature and price tags. This move could also steer customers to Beats Bluetooth over ears headphones should they want larger headphones. This is all still a major rumor though, so we can’t say for certain any of this will happen. All we know right now is that a trademark filing was made for the name AirPods and it links back to Apple. But it is hard to get that rumor out of your head when paired with the headphone jack removal.
