According to Movie Pilot, rumors are swirling that Walking Dead star Steven Yeun could/should be the next version of Robin/Nightwing (aka Dick Grayson) in the Batman universe.
After the #OscarsSoWhite controversy that occurred earlier this year (which included Chris Rock’s “joke” about Asians), and the recent Toronto Film Festival debut of a Bruce Lee biopic that wasn’t actually about Bruce Lee, having an Asian actor in a prominent superhero role could pave the way for more.
Nightwing may start out as a supporting character in an upcoming Batman film, but it would be very conceivable for the once sidekick to headline his own movies. Robin (who eventually becomes Nightwing) was originally created in 1940 to give the Batman series a lighter tone, and to appeal to a more teenage-centric audience. To this day, the character still maintains a youthful charm and has possibly even become a sex symbol.
At this point, nothing is substantiated, but if it proves to be true it could be a huge step forward for Hollywood.
