“Transform the Smartphone Challenge” producing fantastic Moto Mod concepts

|
,

When we first took a look at the Moto Z and Moto Z Play last year and the released Moto Mods, we couldn’t help but wonder what was on the horizon for Moto Mods. Shortly after, Lenovo and Motorola announced the “Transform the Smartphone Challenge” and a series of hackathons. The first hackathon occurred in New York, and since then another has taken place in San Francisco as well as a Campus Party hackathon in Buenos Aires and a planning event in India.

A few of the Moto Mod concepts that were unveiled at the San Francisco event include a Solar-Powered Battery Charger which uses sunlight to keep your Moto Z charged, a Simple Syrup blood glucose monitoring mod, and a breathalyzer Moto Mod called ModCoholic which was created by four high school students. Check out some of the highlights from the San Francisco MotoMods Hackathon in the video below.

A couple cool ideas came out of the Buenos Aires event as well and include a Baby Care Moto Mod which monitors room conditions and alerts you when a room is too hot or too cold, and a color sensor for the visually impaired called Moto Color which emits sounds based on what color is currently being analyzed. We already took a look at some of the past featured Moto Mod concepts, including a wireless charging style shell Moto Mod that hit Indiegogo — and is 87% backed with 26 days to go at the time of this article — as part of the “Transform the Smartphone Challenge.” Since then, many more Moto Mod concepts have hit Indiegogo so we thought we’d take a quick look at our favourites so far.

Linc Smart Walkie-Talkie Moto Mod

Even though our phones are adequate most days, there are times where we may find ourselves out of range of cell phone towers or service. That’s where the Linc Smart Walkie-Talkie Moto Mod comes in — and it even works with other walkie-talkies.

Linc Smart Walkie – Talkie MotoMod™ Concept for Moto Z smartphones is a revolutionary must-have communication tool for each and every outdoor enthusiast.

With a range of up to 5 miles, it’s a perfect way for family and friends to stay in touch whether tackling a back country trail, making their way through an amusement park, or whenever cellular coverage is no where in sight.

From the Linc app, access, text, GPS locations sharing, channel selections, Radio-Over-Internet mode, VOX, & more.

Currently being developed by Robert Jimenez from the U.S., the Linc Smart Walkie-Talkie Moto Mod is currently funding on Indiegogo with a fixed goal target of $12,000. Early contributors can also snag a Bluetooth shoulder microphone and base charger for $169USD. Check out the video below and hit the link to support this Indiegogo campaign.

InstruMod – A Moto Z Mod Measuring Instrument

The InstruMod comes to use all the way from South Africa. This all-in-one measuring device aims to measure voltage, current, resistance, continuity, temperature, length, angles, weight, light intensity, and much more.

The InstruMod is a multifunctional smartphone based measuring instrument. Attach it onto your Moto Z and you have an entire Laboratory in your pocket. Incorporates a wireless probes design that works with a microcontroller embedded on the probes, responsible for converting analogue to digital. Use the accompanying android app for documenting your project development, making calculations and displaying readings.

The developers are looking to raise a fixed goal of $15,000 in the next month to be able to further develop the InstruMod for the Moto Z smartphones.

FirstAid Mod for Moto Z

The FirstAid Mod for the Moto Z is the first of a few mods being pitched by C. Technology and Services, a small group of Mexican developers. The FirstAid Mod certainly has our eye as it integrates three essential first aid monitoring tools into one Moto Mod.

Equipped with a glucometer, a digital thermometer and a blood pressure monitor the FirstAid mod it is the best tool for your medical kit. As part of a family where diabetes and heart disease lures around every corner having the tools to monitor your health is really important. Never has it been so easy: connect your mod, take a strip out of the built-in compartment and check your glucose levels, or plug the blood pressure monitor to the back of the mod to have all the data stored in your phone.

The developers are looking to fund a $7500 flexible goal in the next 24 days.

Edge

This Moto Mod concept falls into the “cool to have” category and enhances your Moto Z notifications with an RGB LED lighting system. The mod is being developed in tandem with an app that will let you choose which notifications to receive and what colors the mod should use for each notification.

Edge is the world’s first RGB lighting system for Moto Z smartphones. Multiple individually powered LEDs can be fully customized to provide a truly individual and enhanced smartphone experience. Forget about boring ringtones or vibrations and take your notifications to a whole new level.

Edge is being developed out of Poland by Imagine Tech and is currently sitting at 45% funded out of their $15,000 fixed goal.

TwoBrothers Mod for Moto Z

One of my biggest complaints about cases for the Moto Z and Moto Z Play is that you have to remove them from your phone when you want to use a Moto Mod. As such, you’re stuck using a Style Shell and the clear plastic bumper on the Moto Z if you regularly use your Moto Mods. The same group of developers from C. Technology and Services in Mexico are developing a Moto Mod case that will protect your phone in the same way traditional cases do while still allowing you to use your Moto Mods.

Do you have a case that allows you to have other mods while it keep you phone safe?  The TwoBrothers mod is the case everyone needs, it’s a 3 part-case but it has a perk, you can keep puting mods on your MotoZ, it means that your phone will be protected no matter what.

With 24 days left, the developers over at C. Technology and Services are hoping to raise $4500USD.

Digital Recorder for Moto Z

Even though technology has moved along, and most devices like smartphones have built-in microphones. To be honest though, while these are o.k. for using your phone a speaker phone, they don’t always make for good recording devices. Milton Fraser from Canada has teamed up with Arrow Electronics to develop the Digital Recorder for Moto Z Moto Mod.

We have managed to create the digital recorder Moto Z smartphones, it turn your phone into a super voice recorder. Our campaign thrives because transforming the mobile phone is important us. Contributions will help us achieve our goal and manufacture this awesome product.

Features include high-quality recording, function buttons, microphone input, headphone output, 4GB of internal storage, and more. Fraser is looking to raise $20,000 in the next month in order to be able to take this Moto Mod to the next stage.

GameOn Mod for Moto Z

Still in the early concept stage, the GameOn Mod concept for the Moto Z family is the third of a few mods being pitched by C. Technology and Services on our list.

Don’t you hate how uncomfortable and tiring is to play games on your mobile? how your screen has always, at least, 2 fingers covering part of it? Wouldn’t you love to see more of what you’re doing, and feel that you are using a regular controller? With extra buttons that act as triggers for whatever you want them to be, and an ergonomic design that fits the shape of your hand, The GameOn Mod is designed to solve all this problems, and potentially more!

With it’s $5,000 flexible goal, there are 24 days left to support this Indiegogo campaign.

Needless to say, we can’t wait to see what comes out of the upcoming events planned for the next hackathon taking place in Shenzhen, China next month.

What do you think about some of the Moto Mod concepts that have been unveiled so far? What do you think would be a great idea for a Moto Mod? Let us know in the comments below, or on Google+, Twitter, or Facebook.
