Canadians can now use PayPal for Kijiji transactions through Kijiji App

In an interesting turn of events, the Kijiji App in Canada now allows sellers to accept PayPal as a payment option when meeting up with buyers. Prior to this new announcement, Kijiji had been warning people about accepting payment for merchandise users were selling on the popular online classified service through PayPal or other online methods due to the increased potential for scams.

It seems the company, owned by eBay, was working on integrating PayPal directly into their Kijiji app to offer more payment options for both sellers and buyers. Once you’ve linked your PayPal account to your Kijiji account, you’ll be able to receive payments. Why would you want to use PayPal for Kijiji transactions? PayPal points out a few reasons:

  • Get paid quickly: Accepting PayPal is quick and easy. When you request payment from the buyer in the Kijiji in-app messaging, you will get your money quickly and you can track all your sales in one place.
  • Convenient for you and your buyer: It’s easy to negotiate when you accept PayPal as your buyer doesn’t have to run to the bank and always has access to their money.
  • Accept Credit: Accepting PayPal lets your buyer fund their purchase with a credit card. This means selling larger items can be faster and even easier.
  • Seller Protection: All sales with PayPal through the Kijiji app are final. Just like with a cash transaction, there are no refunds and sellers are protected against buyer claims and buyer fraud.

It will definitely be easier and more convenient for buyers, not to mention allowing sellers and buyers to use credit cards as a form of acceptable payment. While you can usually dispute a PayPal transaction, when paying for a Kijiji transaction with PayPal, the sale is final. As a seller, you can be guaranteed payment and not have to worry about the buyer turning around and disputing the transaction after they’ve left.

When the buyer and seller meet and settle on a price, the seller can request payment through the Kijiji in-app messaging feature and the buyer can reply to send the payment. One of the steps specifically asks the buyer if they are with the seller and while anyone can click on the “Yes” button, it is an extra level of warning by Kijiji and PayPal that the transaction should only occur if the buyer and seller are together.

Kijiji-PayPal-steps
Using PayPal for Kijiji transactions takes three simple steps.

Unlike a cash payment though, there is a PayPal fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction which is charged to the seller when the payment is accepted so you might want to keep that in mind as a seller when the buyer tries to haggle your asking price down.
