We all knew it was coming and the day is finally here that you can enjoy the Xbox One X Enhanced Forza Horizon 3 in all its native 4K glory on the Xbox One X console.

In addition to running in native 4K, the free update (which went live today at 10 a.m. PT) also includes visual updates. These updates include improved car reflections, shadow resolutions, texture detail for roads and terrain surfaces, and much more. The enhancements also cover both expansions — “Blizzard Mountain” and “Hot Wheels.”

Playground Games’ creative director, Ralph Fulton, was quick to point out that those on the Xbox One and Xbox One S would see some trickle-down improvements as well due to the update. Focusing mostly on visual enhancements, Fulton is also looking forward to some of the community photographs with the enhanced visuals.

“These enhancements are all about the visuals,” says Fulton. “We know that our fans really value great image quality, so we’ve taken this opportunity to deliver that to them with this update on Xbox One X. On top of the obvious enhancement to native 4K, there are a number of other improvements we’ve made which really take advantage of the added definition 4K brings. Reflections are sharper and clearer, environment shadows are crisper and better defined, the quality of motion blur has been increased to make the driving experience significantly smoother, and better anisotropic filtering improves the detail visible in environment textures, particularly on the roads themselves. For me, the biggest improvement is in the combination of 4K and HDR though, especially in Forza Horizon 3‘s dynamic time-lapse skies. The sky is such a huge part of nearly every scene in the game that it affects the feel of the game a great deal, and the improvements we’ve made to reflections and shadows really complement it.

I follow a bunch of Forza photography accounts on Twitter, where the creativity of Forza fans always blows me away, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the community photographs which come out of the enhanced version.”

Given the differences I noticed while playing Assassin’s Creed Origins on the original Xbox One and the Xbox One X, as well as the visual fidelity of Forza Motorsport 7, I’m excited to check out the improved enhanced version of Forza Motorsport 3.
