The Motorola Razr name may rise from the ashes in the form of a foldable smartphone

The Motorola Razr is an icon among cellphones and chances are you had one at some point. I remember my black Motorola Razr fondly in all its aluminum glory. The Razr design was something to marvel at and millions of people eagerly scooped them up. Years later the Motorola Razr name reemerged in the form of a smartphone but those didn’t have the same impact as the original Razr.

Now, according to The Wall Street Journal, the Motorola Razr name may rise from the ashes in the form of a US$1,500 foldable smartphone. Lenovo owns the Motorola phone brand and is said to be partnering with Verizon to make this phone a reality. The Journal says we may see the device as early as this February.

Foldable phones are going to be a thing in 2019 with Samsung and Royole releasing their own folding smartphones. The new Razr is still being tested so the February release date may be a bit premature but no one really knows all of the facts. Lenovo has dropped suggestions that the Razr name might come back but no solid information ever came of it. Given that foldable smartphones are now possible and en vogue, this rumor could very well be true.

It will be interesting to see the approach Lenovo takes with the design of the Razr. We already know what the Royole FlexPai phone looks like and Samsung sort of gave us a look at their folding phone. Perhaps the new Motorola Razr will be even thinner than both of those offerings? Only time will tell.
