Adobe Launches Lightroom Mobile For Android Phones

Adobe, creator of some of the world’s most popular photo editing and design software, has finally released Lightroom mobile for Android. The app, already available for iOS devices, allows photographers and photo editors to sync and edit photo collections between mobile and desktop for on the go editing.

In case you’re not familiar with Lightroom mobile, the app allows you to sync your photo collections, metadata, and edits between your mobile devices and Lightroom on your Windows or Mac computer. Images taken from your smartphone can be automatically imported and synced back to your desktop collection as well. Adobe uses what it calls Smart Previews which is based on the DNG file format and offers the same flexibility of editing a raw file – but is only approximately 5% of the original file size. This smaller file size allows your photos and collections to sync in almost real time between your devices and desktop computer.

Lightroom mobile for Android will run on any Android phone with a Quad Core CPU running 1.7GHz or higher, 1GB RAM, and 8GB internal storage. Lightroom mobile is compatible with Android Jellybean (4.1), KitKat (4.4), and Lollipop (5.x). At this time, the app is only available for phones with tablet support to come later on.

In order to use Lightroom mobile, you’ll have to subscribe to one of Adobe’s subscription plans – the most affordable being their Creative Cloud Photography plan which costs $9.99USD/mth and includes Photoshop, Lightroom, Lightroom mobile, and Lightroom Web. You can also try out the app for 30-days at no charge, after which time you will have to purchase a Creative Cloud subscription.

We were able to test out Lightroom mobile before release, and it is indeed pretty slick – especially if you already use Lightroom on your desktop. The mobile app allows you to crop your photos and edit with any setting found within the basic panel of Lightroom desktop. These options include:

  • White balance
  • Temperature
  • Tint
  • Auto tone
  • Exposure
  • Contrast
  • Highlights
  • Shadows
  • Whites
  • Blacks
  • Clarity
  • Vibrance
  • Saturation

Lightroom mobile allows you to adjust a number of settings and edit and sync your photos while on the go.

In addition to being able to adjust the basics, Lightroom presets are available as well. Unfortunately only the native presets are available in the app at launch, with support for other Lightroom compatible presets coming later. After making changes, the modifications are synced back to the cloud and then back to your Lightroom desktop application. You can also share your photos from Lightroom mobile through Lightroom Web or by using the native Android share functionality.

While you can set up Lightroom mobile to auto import your photos from your smartphone, support for Android DNG and video isn’t currently available. For those wondering about shooting tethered to a DSLR, it is possible but will only import JPG formats and not RAW formats at this time.

I don’t know about you, but I think I may have just found my new default photo editing application for my Android devices.
