A Casio Smartwatch Could Be Coming In March 2016, Look Out Apple!

Like most forty something’s around these days I grew up with Casio as a household name and I even owned the famed Casio calculator watch. Casio was always a brand that you could trust back in those days but as the technology landscape has changed they’ve kind of fallen off the radar. Android Wear, Pebble and Apple are the current front runners in smartwatch market but The Wall Street Journal reports that a Casio smartwatch will be entering the fray in March 2016.

Casio is betting on their years of experience in making watches and they have dabbled in smart functions in watches, like heart rate monitors, but nothing has really taken off. It wasn’t clear what kind of software the Casio smartwatch would run, whether it’s custom or a version of Android Wear remains to be seen. One thing they could do to perhaps have a leg up on both Google and Apple is to create a smartwatch that will function with both major mobile operating systems. One thing that is clear is the price tag. Casio says the watch will be affordable coming in about the same price as the Apple Watch Sport, that price tag can be debated.

“At times we just showed off with quirky features and then pulled those products when they didn’t sell well,” said Kazuhiro Kashio, the company’s new president, in an interview this week.

Now, he said, “we are trying to bring our smartwatch to a level of watch perfection: a device that won’t break easily, is simple to put on and feels good to wear.”
