VLC Media Player Coming To Apple tvOS

There are very few details on this developing story but it seems VLC Media Player is coming to Apple tvOS. Lead developer for VLC, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, announced the development in his personal blog with one simple line.

Oh, and one more thing… we started to prepare VLC for tvOS. :)

This is a huge thing if VLC is truly coming to Apple tvOS as this would allow playback of almost every type of media file, many not supported by Apple. Simply put, this means that if Apple TV is network connected and can access NAS drives and other storage you could play back your entire media library. VLC has been the go to desktop application for those pesky video files that you can’t play in iTunes or Windows Media Player. It’s much easier to use VLC and it’s vast array of codex than to try and convert a file to a playable format.

Having VLC on Apple TV will finally make it a viable alternative for many against the Roku and others. Apple TV had been limited with the popular Plex app and service not even being available, and you were forced to solely watch the app content presented by Apple. Word is Plex will be coming to Apple TV as well, so that doubles the attractiveness of Apple TV. Having both VLC and Plex available along with the new gaming capabilities, the new Apple TV is probably the best announcement the company made at its September event.
