Motorola Unveils Moto Mods, Lets You Transform Your Smartphone

Moto Mods

We use our phones for everything these days: music, movies, games, directions, and nearly any other form of distraction you can think of. Our phones are already pretty powerful devices, but what if you could quickly and easily augment the abilities of your phone? Moto Mods aim to allow you to transform your smartphone in a snap, by connecting to the back of the Moto Z Force Droid Edition, and Moto Z Droid Edition smartphones.

You might first be wondering, how do these mods attach to the Moto Z? The answer is really quite simple: magnets — really strong magnets. The magnets will hold the Moto Mods in place and keep them in exactly the right place. Motorola also intends to make these mods future proof. They have worked with their partners to make mods that will work with this year’s Moto Z line of phones, while also working with future models of the Moto Z.

With Moto Mods, Motorola wants installation to be as easy as possible. We’ve already talked about how the mods are held on using very strong magnets. Your Moto Z will recognize the mod that has been attached, and should require at most a couple of taps on the screen to get everything up and going, though most won’t require any setup at all.

What kind of mods are going to be available? You can get a general overview in the video below, then keep reading for a more detailed breakdown.

Moto Insta-Share Projector

Taking a page from parent company Lenovo’s playbook, the Moto Insta-Share Projector Mod will attach and allow you to project an image up to 70″ on any surface, and from any angle. We’ve seen what the portable projectors on several Lenovo devices can do, so this should be a mod worth checking out.

JBL SoundBoost Speaker

If you’ve been reading Techaeris for any period of time, you’ll know that we’ve also been quite impressed with the speaker and headphone offerings from JBL. The SoundBoost speaker adds not only a quality speaker, but also an additional battery to keep the music going longer without eating away at your phone’s battery. The SoundBoost mod also includes a kickstand to keep the speaker up and off of the table.

Incipio offGRID™ Power Pack

Next up is the Incipio offGRID Power Pack. This 2220mAh battery will add up to a reported 22 hours of usage to your Moto Z. We’ve been big fans of Incipio’s products here too, so Moto Z owners will be in good hands with this power pack. In addition to the extra juice, this pack offers wireless charging and Efficiency Mode charging will only start to refill once your phone’s battery is below 80%, offering a more efficient charge. The offGRID is also available in Incipio’s Designer Editions, with designs from kate spade new york and TUMI.

Moto Style Shells

Last, but certainly not least are the Moto Style Shells. Moto has offered customization options since the first generation Moto X. You could choose different colors, different back plates, etc. to make your phone a true representation of you. But what if you wanted a slightly different representation? Moto Z will make that easy with interchangeable Moto Style Shells. Choose from real wood or leather, or various patterned fabrics to make your device your own. Then choose a new one for tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day… There will be plenty of options to choose from.
