Before you take off on this Friday afternoon, take a look at an upcoming movie from Luc Besson. Known for films such as The Fifth Element and Lucy, Besson returns to space for his adaptation of the long-running French graphic novel, Valérian and LaurelineValerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is set to release on June 21, 2017 but we can take our first look at the film in its first trailer now.

Starring Dane DeHaan as the titular Valerian, and Cara Delevingne as Laureline, the film (and its original source) follow the two space and time travelling agents as they attempt to maintain order throughout the universe. The full synopsis, by way of Wikipedia, tells us:

Valerian and Laureline embark on a mission to the breathtaking intergalactic city of Alpha, an ever-expanding metropolis comprised of thousands of different species from all four corners of the universe. Alpha’s seventeen million inhabitants have converged over time – uniting their talents, technology and resources for the betterment of all. Unfortunately, not everyone on Alpha shares in these same objectives; in fact, unseen forces are at work, placing our race in great danger.

The Fifth Element, for all its faults, was a beautifully made movie for the time, and Besson looks to have picked up a few new tricks in the visual effects department because everything in this trailer looks spectacular. All kinds of diverse and unique alien life forms, bustling city “streets” that put what we saw in The Fifth Element to shame… This movie wasn’t on my radar at all but definitely is now in a big way.
