Design

At a glance, the Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Bluetooth Earphones look like your average pair of wireless earbuds. The right and left earbuds are connected with a wire, and roughly 2 1/2″ below each earbud is a matte black rectangular box. The one on the right is your remote/battery and houses the multi-function, volume up/next track, and volume down/previous track buttons, charging port, and four small microphone holes on the reverse side. The box on the left side houses the battery and has the Decibullz logo on the front.

The Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Earphones have a control unit and battery unit.

The earbuds are pretty non-descript and are cylindrical in shape with the Decibullz logo on the end of each. On the inside where the earbud attaches to the wire, a small L or R indicates which is the right or left earbud. The silicone tips are translucent grey, and in the case of our review sample have a red interior which attaches to the earbud.

Where the Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Bluetooth Earphones differ is with an additional piece that snaps onto your earbud. Most wireless earbuds have ear tips and ear wings/hooks/secure-tips that you can use for a more secure fit. Decibullz, on the other hand, uses a thermoplastic mold that attaches onto the earbud and the silicone tips attach to the mold. The thermoplastic mold is the main component with color on the earphones. Our review sample was red, but Decibullz are also available in black, blue, orange, and pink.

While the Decibullz  earphones look like your average wireless earbuds, the thermoplastic molds do offer a bit of a unique look. Overall the design is solid, and the earbuds are decently constructed.

Ease of Use

In this review, ease of use is going to fall into two parts. Like most other wireless earbuds, the Decibullz are easy to pair with your device, and once paired it’s as simple as pressing or holding a button to play or pause your current track, answer or hang up on a call, adjust the volume, or skip tracks.

The second part focuses on the custom-fit aspect of the Decibullz earphones. When I took the molds out of the box, I noticed they were hard and not pliable at all. Opening the instructions, I’ll admit I was skeptical seeing that the instructions have you boiling water, removing it from the heat source, and then placing the molds in them. After carefully reading the instructions, I proceeded to “cook” my earbuds and attempt to shape them to my ear.

Aside from taking about 20 minutes, the process was an easy seven step process:

  1. Attach correct size silicone tips to mold (can be changed after molding process is complete).

    Ear tips attached.
  2. Boil or microwave water, remove from heat (use glass or ceramic cup if using microwave).
  3. Place ONE mold in the hot water, let sit for 5 minutes.

  4. Remove mold with metal spoon and let cool for 30 seconds.

  5. Plug earbud into back of mold.

    Attach to earbud.
  6. Insert mold and earbud into ear. Gently press mold to fill concha (the bowl) of your ear. It helps to use a mirror for this step.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes then repeat with the other mold.

After I completed the process on both earbuds, while the first earbud fit, it didn’t look as smooth as it could have and the second looked much better while still fitting nicely. The great news is, you can re-heat and re-do the process if you’re not pleased with the outcome or need to readjust the fit.

Custom-fit earbuds!

Decibullz has even provided a video showing the process, and it really is as easy and painless as the video shows.

Sound

The Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Bluetooth Earphones are very good sounding earbuds with clear, crisp, balanced sound across lows, mids, and highs. I would have liked to hear a bit more on the bass end of the scale but that was easily rectifiable with my phone’s equalizer. Even at full volume, the sound is clear without getting muddied or cracking with the AptX® High Definition Audio Streaming technology used in these earbuds.

Reception/Call Quality

The microphone is located on the back of the remote control unit, but when worn it sits towards the back of your neck. While I could hear the other party fine in a call, I found I had to speak quite loudly in order for them to hear me. I tried to hold the microphone closer to my mouth but the best I could get with both earbuds in was beside my cheek.

Another thing I found was that these earbuds seemed to drop off a lot sooner than other earbuds when leaving my phone on a table and walking away from it. I’d get about 15 feet away before the signal seemed to have problems staying connected, and I tested this on two different phones. To be honest, that’s not a dealbreaker for me as my phone is usually close but it may be for some.

Battery Life

Battery life on wireless earbuds is always something to be desired and usually averages around the 4 to 5 hour mark depending on how loud you listen to your music. The Decibullz Custom-Fit earphones lasted an average of 4 hours per charge and take about 2 hours to recharge.

Price/Value

With an MSRP of $149.99USD, the Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Bluetooth Earphones are currently on sale for $119.99USD on both the Decibullz website and on Amazon. With decent sound and battery life, the added value here for sure is the ability to custom-fit them to your ears.

Wrap-up

If you’re looking for a pair of wireless earbuds that you can custom-fit to your ears, the Decibullz Custom-Fit Wireless Bluetooth Earphones are easy to custom-fit to your ears and offer great sound, decent battery life, and shouldn’t fall out while you’re exercising.
