Toffee Osaka Satchel review: A just the essentials work satchel

TA-ratings-90I own a handful of tech-oriented backpacks and they’re all perfectly fine backpacks to be certain. There is one problem with most of them though: they are big. The Toffee Osaka Satchel aims to shed the bulky overload and slim things down. There are times you need a backpack to carry a lot of stuff, but you don’t always need a lot of stuff. The Osaka Satchel carries only the essentials, which does work in certain applications. Read on for the full review of the Toffee Osaka Satchel.

Design

We’ve reviewed a couple Toffee bags here in the past and the other reviewers loved their bags. I was a bit skeptical at first because I knew the bag I was getting was fairly small. Being used to large backpacks I wasn’t sure how this would work out for me.

First, let me tell you that the satchel is made from very high-quality materials, they didn’t skimp on materials. The canvas feels very premium and the buckles are all solid metal and have a nice heft to them. The leather is real, no doubt in my mind here, you can smell it and you know how nice that smell is.

The satchel has a nice long shoulder strap that can be adjusted down to make more of carrying handle. I do wish the strap was removable and that there was a separate handle on the top. The satchel is secured with a nice metal buckle that is made to look like a leather strap, very nice design cue.

When you open the front up you are greeted with a place to put your contact information should you lose your satchel. The first zipper you see opens to a compartment you can hold small papers, business cards, ID or even a cell phone and earbuds. The zipper is super huge and high-quality and the zipper pull is leather.

Going deeper into the bag you find two more compartments. The back compartment is smaller and buttoned down with a leather strap. This area can be used for just about anything as well, sunglasses, keys, chapstick, and things like that. The main compartment I used to carry my work tablet, the Surface Pro 4. I think this compartment is perfect for a tablet like the Surface Pro or smaller iPad or even a small laptop or Chromebook.

Finally, around the back of the Osaka Satchel is a small compartment that I never really used but may be good for small items like lipstick or even ID’s. Overall the design is impeccable and Toffee spared no expense when it came to materials.

Premium materials throughout this bag, even the llama loved it.

Protection

The only thing protecting your laptop or tablet in this bag is the canvas and soft cloth lining. There is no hardened bottom or any sort of extra padding or protection. That doesn’t make it a bad bag and with the long shoulder strap, it’s fairly easy to keep on your shoulder. If it does happen to slip off, the fall isn’t that far. On the plus side, it is water resistant canvas.

Price/Value

At $99.95USD the Osaka Satchel isn’t very cheap, but neither are the build quality and materials used. I think if you’re looking for a fashionable and premium bag, this is a great choice. If you’re not concerned with looks and how good the materials are, then it’s probably too pricey for you.

Wrap Up

A really nice satchel made from super nice materials. The price is a bit higher than some may prefer but it’s not those people Toffee is marketing to.
