Review: JLab EPIC Earbuds

JLab Audio is well known throughout both the tech and music industries for delivering quality audio accessories for hardcore audiophiles and the average consumer alike. The company designs some of the highest quality headphones and Bluetooth speakers on the market. Recently, JLab sent me a pair of their EPIC in-ear earbuds to test out. Spoiler alert: I was impressed.

JLab-Epic-Header-earbudsRight out of the gate, you can tell that your money has been spent wisely. The EPIC earbuds feature flat, ribbon-like cables that keep them more or less tangle free. They also come with 6 different tip sizes and 4 different adjustable cushions, dubbed Cush Fins. The Cush Fins help the earbuds stay where they belong. Since everyone has a different shaped ear, JLab decided to deliver as many configurations as possible, claiming over 1,000 different variations. With all of these options, it can be a little time consuming finding the perfect fit. Trust me when I say that you will find your perfect fit, though, and it will be glorious.

Customization is nice, but what about the sound? Frankly, you won’t be disappointed. The earbuds feature huge 13mm drivers that pump music directly into your skull, which is the very best way to enjoy your music in my opinion. The sound is crisp and clear. But the benefit of being able to find the perfect fit isn’t just that your music will sound better. No, the tight fit will ensure that the bass really booms and that you rock out in your living room as if you’re Slash on stage at a concert.

jlab-epic-partsI listened to a large smattering of music: Alt rock, classical, pop, 80’s rock, and heavy metal. I found the bass to be fantastic, but not overbearing. I also listened to about twenty minutes of an audio book, took several phone calls (the earbuds have a built-in mic and answer button), and watched a bit of a TV show on my tablet. The EPIC earbuds certainly work well for these endeavors, but really excel at delivering a pure music experience overall.

I did find that the treble isn’t always perfect, but as someone who prefers a focus on bass over treble, I easily overlooked this as a non-issue. Also, the travel case is almost too big for a product with ribbon cables, but if your significant other likes to listen with the EPIC earbuds as well, it can’t hurt to have a little extra storage for another set of tips and Cush Fins.

Overall, the JLab EPIC Earbuds are some of the best in-ear headphones I’ve ever tried. The quality of the sound is phenomenal for the price. You can buy your very own set at the JLab store, and they come in black and blue.
