Xbox One DLNA & MKV Support in October Update Preview

Once again Xbox is bringing another update to the Xbox One, continuing the recent trend of monthly dashboard updates. The October Update Preview brings Xbox One DLNA & MKV support as well as improvements to Snap and TV functionality.

I think the biggest update in the preview is full DLNA and MKV support with the recently launched Media Player app. This is one of the features I’ve still been using my Xbox 360 for, and I think this could finally be the Xbox One update that effectively reduces my 360 to an idle relic of gaming past (RIP Xbox 360, you’ve served me well!). It’s also nice to finally see MKV support, something that the 360 didn’t have.

Some of the Snap Center updates include faster access to popular functions during gameplay – Friends, Messages, Game DVR, clock and battery indicator. As you can see in the video above, it will also be easier to open and close new Snap apps while in a game. Friends and Messages have been optimized for the Snap App as well – definitely a welcome update as these are two of the features gamers are most inclined to use during gaming.

Other minor additions include updates to the Achievement App (updates to sharing, list of friends who have unlocked specific achievements, and more), Friends section (easier to stay up-to-date with your friends recent activities, a gamerscore leaderboard, as well as most popular games amongst your XBL friends), and some new SmartGlass features (ability to see a list of your top games when using the app).

For those using OneGuide in the US, Canada, and the UK, Live TV Trending will show trending TV based on your OneGuide settings. The Xbox One Digital TV Tuner will be available in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain on October 21 and will allow users to watch and pause live TV on the Xbox One.

What new features are you looking forward to the most? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter!
