Coming Soon: TETRIS… The MOVIE! (Yes, seriously.)

, ,

In an effort to beat other studios to “Rubik’s Cube: The Movie” and “Pictionary: The Movie”, Threshold Entertainment has announced they are developing a sci-fi movie around the video game Tetris. Larry Kasanoff (who you might remember for bringing Mortal Kombat to the big screen) is heading up the project.

No cast or director has been announced but signs are pointing to the movie having a working script or story in place based on comments from Kasanoff:

“It’s a very big, epic sci-fi movie … “This isn’t a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We’re not giving feet to the geometric shapes.”

Tetris, you might recall, was created in 1984 by Soviet game designer Alexey Pajitnov and made its way to the U.S. in 1987. The game became a must have on Game Boy for Nintendo of America in 1989, and it’s now considered to be one of the greatest games of all time. However, Tetris is a puzzle game featuring no story what so ever other than blocks falling and the player trying to make lines across the game area to clear blocks. It will be interesting to see just how Kasanoff can create something worth going to the theaters for out of that.

Meanwhile, I’m sure you’re thinking what we’re all thinking which is “Hollywood has run out of ideas”. I will play devil’s advocate here and at least mention that Hollywood is just making a cash grab on the 80’s right now, rather than blame this movie’s creation solely on lack of artistic inspiration. With the monetary success of movies like Transformers: Age of Extinction and Michael Bay produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – which were both critical bombs to say the least – it’s no wonder Hollywood is seeing what else they can cash in on.

More details to come for Tetris… in the mean time, do you think Tetris can avoid the slippery slope of crappy video game/board game movie adaptations? I’m looking at you Super Mario Bros.
