We’ve covered Tesla and Elon Musk extensively here on Techaeris mostly because we love the idea of an all electric car that is beautifully designed. Now Ford is considering giving Tesla some competition by possibly building their own electric vehicle. Ford CEO Mark Fields said the company has the know how and tools to make a vehicle like the Model S but didn’t actually say they would, instead offering this vague quote.
It’s consistent with our product philosophy.
Fields went on to say if they company was to build such a vehicle it wouldn’t copy the Tesla but it would be a larger vehicle than their Ford Focus electric. One wonders if Ford will be using any of Tesla’s recently released technology documents to help them accomplish their goal. While not confirmed, it is encouraging to see a large auto maker considering a larger move into electric vehicles. If Ford indeed moves into making another electric vehicle we could see the other auto makers jump in as well. Competition is a good thing and with more of these types of vehicles on the market it should bring prices down as well, allowing more people to afford them. We’re excited to see if Ford actually does this, it would be a great thing for many reasons. What do you think? Should Ford move ahead and build their own Model S type car?
