YouTube Finally Launches Support for 60FPS Video

Earlier this year, video service YouTube hinted at support for 48 and 60 fps (frames-per-second) video playback on the popular site. While a few videos surfaced here and there, YouTube is finally rolling out support for higher fps for all users.

While most users may not notice a difference in playback on YouTube videos, one area it will make a huge difference in is the playback of video game footage as most gamers who share game footage play, and have the ability to record, at frame speeds of much higher than 30fps. As you can see from the videos below, the gameplay looks much smoother at the higher frame rate.

And hey, why not check out some Halo in glorious 60fps while we’re at it?

We’re sure many gamers are rejoicing today at finally being able to upload, and view, their game clips on YouTube at 60fps. In order to view content at 60fps, you’ll have to go into the settings on the video, select either 720p60 or 1080p60 – lower resolutions don’t currently support the faster frame rates.

As a bit of an extra treat, check out one of our favourites – the Big Buck Bunny open source movie in all its glorious 60fps playback!
