Blizzard Announces New FPS, Overwatch

In the opening ceremonies of the highly anticipated annual convention, Blizzcon, Blizzard Entertainment announced their newest intellectual property – Overwatch.

Touted to be a team-based, first-person shooter, Overwatch gets its name from the international task force of heroes that banded together to save a futuristic, war-torn, Earth-like planet in crisis. After peace was restored, decades of exploration, discovery, and innovation ensued, however after generations had forgotten the horrors of war, the Overwatch‘s influence began to wane and they went their separate ways. Despite the lack of organized hero-ing, the world was still in need of heroes, as depicted in this epic trailer:

Introducing four styles of characters – offense, defense, tank, and support, players can choose from twelve different heroes all with varying play styles and abilities. Blizzard had 600 machines set up to allow lucky Blizzcon attendees to be the very first people in the general public to play the franchise’s very Team Fortress 2-esque game in 6v6 PvP matches, capturing or defending points, and attacking or delivering payloads across three unique maps. Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment, explains his take on Overwatch:

Overwatch is our take on a vibrant, near-future universe with amped-up characters and action-packed team-based gameplay. With every new Blizzard game, we look at our favorite aspects of a genre and put our own spin on things. Our goal with Overwatch is to create an awesome FPS experience that’s more accessible to a much wider audience while delivering the action and depth that shooter fans love.”

More heroes and maps will likely be added to the game as development continues over the following months with beta testing reportedly to begin sometime in 2015.
