The David Ayer directed Suicide Squad cast has officially been confirmed by Warner Bros. As we reported previously, Margot Robbie nailed down the spot of Harley Quinn, and a lot of other rumored actors landed their speculated roles.
Jared Leto will indeed be playing The Joker, which will be the characters first big screen representation since Heath Ledger’s passing shortly before 2008’s The Dark Knight released. Leto has long been rumored for the part, and he should fit right in alongside the rest of the great actors that have played Batman’s most popular foe. A list that includes Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill (voice), and the aforementioned Heath Ledger.
Joining Leto as The Joker will be Deadshot, played by Will Smith. Yeah, that Will Smith. Skin color aside (which, if you’re complaining about that anyway, who cares what you think), Smith could potentially make the perfect Deadshot, depending on which Will Smith we get. Do we get the fun and energetic, yet still relatively pragmatic Smith that was in Men in Black and his other similar roles, or do we get the grumpy old man in the atrocious After Earth? If the former, he could be great if he doesn’t take it too far.
Will Smith’s last attempt at a superhero, in the anti-hero story of Hancock was pretty mixed. Maybe it was just the type of character Hancock was, but there was too much of the grumpy old Smith there. It will be interesting to see how he turns out as the over-the-top Deadshot and if the 46-year-old can still bring the energy he’s known for.
The leader of the Suicide Squad, Rick Flag, will be played by Tom Hardy. Fresh off playing another DC villain, Bane, Hardy will be taking the role of military expert and leader of this league of baddies in Suicide Squad. Comic book Rick Flag spans three different paternal generations, but he will likely be squeezed into one movie-sized character for the film.
Other confirmed roles include Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
Jesse Einsenberg, who is playing Lex Luthor in the upcoming Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, has been heavily rumored to have a part in Suicide Squad, but his name is curiously absent from the cast confirmation. That’s not to say he won’t be involved at all, but his part may be even smaller than initially thought.
Production for Suicide Squad is set to begin next April, and the film is expected to release on August 5th, 2016.[button type=”link” link=”http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/12/02/suicide-squad-cast-confirmed-leto-is-joker-smith-deadshot” size=”btn-sm” variation=”btn-danger” target=”blank”]Source: IGN[/button]
