Microsoft Takes Over Publishing Of Rise Of The Tomb Raider

What was first announced as an Xbox exclusive, and later clarified to be a timed exclusive, may once again become an Xbox exclusive as Microsoft has taken over the publishing of the upcoming Rise of the Tomb Raider.

This information was verified by Aaron Greenberg on Twitter:

This news was also verified by Square Enix:

“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox,” Square Enix’s statement read.

“Microsoft has always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the Tomb Raider franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”

Based on the initial statement that Rise of the Tomb Raider would be an Xbox exclusive, coupled with Microsoft’s track history of not releasing Playstation version of games it publishes, one has to wonder not when, but if, Sony’s next-gen console will ever see the game.

Square Enix also told Game Informer:

“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’ on Xbox,” a Square Enix representative told us via email. “Microsoft has always seen huge potential in ‘Tomb Raider’ and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the ‘Tomb Raider’ franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”

At this point, only time will tell just how exclusive Rise of the Tomb Raider will be – either Playstation fans will be left out in the dark, or we’ll finally see a Microsoft published game come to Sony’s console.

Let us know what you think about Microsoft taking over publishing of the next Tomb Raider game.
