Wii Games Coming To Wii U eShop

During their Nintendo direct earlier today, Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata announced that select Wii games are being released on the Wii U eShop.
Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available today, Punch-Out available January 22nd, and Metroid Trilogy available January 29th. All three games will be on sale for half price for a week after their release, but it was not stated how much they would cost upon release.

It was also revealed that any Wii game that supports the classic controller will be usable with the Wii U GamePad, alleviating one of the biggest pains when it comes to Wii U’s backwards capability. That’s not to say this is true backwards compability, however, this is simply buying a new downloadable game similar to the Game Boy Advance, SNES, and NES games currently available in the console’s eShop.

This is perfect for anyone who didn’t get the chance to play the games when they first came out, assuming they aren’t priced too expensively. So far there is no word on a release date for any more Wii games, but if other consoles on the eShop are any indication, we should expect some pretty frequent updates.
This will not affect the Wii U’s true backwards compatibility or your ability to play your Wii games in ‘Wii Mode’ in any way.
