In the development of DC’s latest television series, Melissa Benoist has landed the title role for Supergirl. Following the success of Arrow and The Flash, Executive Producer Greg Berlanti will also produce the upcoming series for CBS.
Benoist, best known for her role as Marley Rose on Glee, will take to the sky as the young Kryptonian Kara Zor-el as she begins to harness her powers. As the cousin of Superman, the series will follow the 24 year-old as she “decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”
Melissa BenoistWhile Benoist may be new to the DC universe, Supergirl was a supporting character on the CW’s Smallville, a story about Superman’s coming of age. It was also the first modern success of a live-action comic tv series that sparked the current trend.
Supergirl will be the fifth DC TV show, following Smallville, Arrow, The Flash and Fox’s Gotham. Benoist won’t be the first former Glee star to jump from high school to fighting crime, as she follows Grant Gustin of The Flash.
With Supergirl hitting the ariwaves potentially as early as next season, it would mean that all five major networks have their own superhero-based series. The CW has The Flash and Arrow, NBC has Constantine, Fox has Gotham, ABC has Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, and now CBS would have their own Supergirl.
