It's Official: Spider-Man Swinging Into Marvel Cinematic Universe Soon

, ,

Rejoice! The dreams of millions of Marvel fans have been answered. A long-rumored deal between Sony and Marvel has reportedly been reached, and Spider-Man is set to appear in a future Marvel Studios film. As of yet, there is no confirmation on what movie he will appear in first, but wherever he does show his masked face one thing is almost certain: it will be a brand new Spider-Man doing the web slinging.
As part of the new deal, Spider-Man is expected to be recast away from Andrew Garfield (confirming earlier rumors from last year), and the character will be rebooting yet again. Marvel reportedly has no interest in telling more origin stories, and Spider-Man will likely get his fresh start as an already-established hero. Current rumors point to his first appearance being in Captain America: Civil War, where he is expected to play a big part in the events that divide The Avengers as they prep for their big internal war going forward.
Once Spider-Man goes through his third reboot in just over a decade, it will be back to Sony for another film expected to release on July 28, 2017. It has not been disclosed what, if any, comic storyline this new Spider-Man film will follow, but there’s a good chance it won’t be another Amazing Spider-Man film, seeing as he will no longer be played by Andrew Garfield.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige will join Sony’s Amy Pascal to produce the new movies, marking a new joint creative effort for the famous web slinging hero. Despite Sony retaining final creative control over any future Spider-Man films, Feige is optimistic about Marvel’s involvement with the hero going forward:

“Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

Sony will also continue to be the main distributor and financier of all future Spider-Man films.
A creative deal such as this between Marvel’s parent company Disney and Sony has been rumored for years now, as fans have been clamoring for Spidey to appear in a proper Marvel film in his rightful place alongside The Avengers. Marvel and Sony are also working on plans to integrate other MCU characters into future Spider-Man films.
Luckily for Spider-Man, a deal was reached between the two studios before Disney took the nuclear option like they have with other iconic characters for whom they don’t own the movies rights. The Fantastic Four, The X-Men, and Deadpool are all characters that Marvel does not own movie rights for that have had their comic book equivalents killed off.
At least on the surface, this deal appears to be a win for everybody. Marvel finally gets a level of creative input over Spider-Man films, Sony gets to keep a big chunk of the money made from said Spider-Man films, and fans finally get to watch Spidey on screen with Captain America.
